Hello fans and customers!
Ok, so it turns out we had some misconceptions pertaining to the inclusion of the Miner Wars MMO with the pre-order package. We have to clear this up now: The MMO is its OWN THING!
If you're unaware of the nature of these things, after I explain why it is this way, you'll understand:
The version of the game you are guaranteed by pre-ordering, WILL (will, will, will) come with multi-player mode, but more in the style of Descent with server lists, each based in one sector/level at a time. An MMO, something quiiite different, takes quite a bit of work, even for a professional company, and a LOT more money/resources to keep running, (server costs, developers, paid maintenance, etc.). Remember, we're an independent company, and as such it is a risk we literally cannot afford until we have substantial, reliable income from the first release (what you have pre-ordered). This has been the plan from the very beginning.
A COMPROMISE
We acknowledge that we could have done a lot more to quell these misconceptions from the start, so we're willing to give anyone who's ordered so far a *free* copy of the MMO when it has been released. We're also willing to do the same for anyone who orders by:
***December 1st, 2010***
(to be fair to those people who were planning to pre-order soon and assumed there was going to be a full-blown MMO as a part of the package)
Heh, so if you haven't ordered yet, order while you can, and to everyone who has ordered, thank you for having patience with the team and enjoy your extended access. :p

WOW - you're actually giving away copies of the eventually-to-be-released Miner Wars 2081 MMO to everyone who pre-ordered Miner Wars 2081 before December 1st, 2010? THIS IS *?!& AWESOME!!! Quite honestly, the only company nowadays that I would expect this kind of action from is Stardock Corporation (aka Stardock), the folks who co-developed "Sins of a Solar Empire" and "Demigod" and created "Elemental: War of Magic". I will DEFINITELY be giving Keen Software House (aka the Miner Wars 2081 Development Team) my respect and future business because of this!

indeed i to look forward to supporting minerwars and keen software house anyway i can.
this was very good of them to do this even when they did not have to not many game companys nowadays are willing to do things like this.
to the developers thank you guys so much for making a game like this. been waiting for a very very long time for a space game like this and you guys are so very kind to give out the MMO like this to the ones that have pre ordered.

Wow... Thanks.
The only company I've seen to do something like this before is Nadeo with their TrackMania expansions... but they won't do it again because now they're part of Ubisoft (which is not only one of the "really big" developers but is also uber-conservative).
I'll have to call my friend who was planning to order and tell him to do it before December 1st.

All right, this makes up for just about everything in this little mix-up. A great way to make it up for a bad oversight on, really, everyone's part. This is also doubly good for me, as I was never interested in the MMO part anyway, just the single-player, and the news that the MMO will in fact be a separate product tells me you're going to put a lot of effort into both, not just some on one aspect (the single-player) and then a lot more on the other (the MMO) that I was fearing when I thought it was a packaged deal. So great news all across the board. :)
'Course, I haven't ordered yet, but it's really the system specs and my probable inability to match them at present that's holding me back. :P
One more suggestion I think needs to be done to further quell this unfortunate misconception is to change the game's description at the top of the site. At the moment, it mentions Miner Wars is both "single-player & MMO," and I think that right there is where a lot of the misconceptions came from, so it'll probably be a good idea to rephrase that, so to avoid further misconceptions from arising.

This is great news for me since it kinda answers my question from this tread:

So, I have a couple of ideas for some multiplayer game concepts.

QUOTE: Miner Wars is a 6DOF underground and space shooter played in a fully destructible environment and is a combination of single player story game and MMO.
QUOTE: Gameplay is led by an epic story and is a combination of a single/multi-player game, cooperative, or you against everyone.
QUOTE: Combination of Single and Multi-Player Elements - Is the mission you're on too tough for you? With just a quick chat you can hire a friend to help you on your quest for the truth!
QUOTE: How will Single player and MMO Mode differ?
The single player game is happening in a different existance than the MMO game. The single-player game becomes multi-player only if you invite your buddies. Then, in fact, it becomes a co-op game.
In MMO mode, players can fight players, join factions, etc. Belonging to a faction has an impact on the missions you can do. In first release, factions won't be controlled by players. This means all the big "higher-up" decisions, such as mission you do, are made by the computer. You can't move the base ship, trade, etc.
However, for second release we do have plans for features such as: players will buy share in a faction (or "corporation"). According to their share they have voting rights. They can elect a corporation director and he can do some direct actions: move base ships, merge corporations, set mission goals, etc. These corporations will work like corporations in the real world, except no government will help them if a crisis knocks on the door! :)
What about "Co-op"?
From the Co-Op point of view there are two situations:
Either you can co-op in your single-player (non-MMO) story, where you can invite your buddies so you fight together against the AI, or MMO mode where you and your buddies join the same faction. Then, together, you can fight against other factions (that are other human players or AI). PvE mode will be implemented as a single-player story. Or, you can enter a sector where there are no other human players.
Hmm.. I wonder where the confusion came from.
Sounds to me like you've just decided that the MMO 'mode' will be too expensive and so split it into a separate game.

Well, I was hoping not to bring up any names, but you're forcing me to :p If you want to know the source of this it's pretty simple. The information you cite was written some time in march or april (a pretty fluid time in production) by Tomas, who although we all love dearly, did not understand all of Marek's plans; though in his defense, who really could? Marek's got a lot in his brain that we tend to slowly unfold over time. Anyway, the point is that the problem came from a lack of communication and understanding, with a healthy dose of not-updating-our-info. As I've stated above, we are taking responsibility for all this, and I believe we've done what we should do to make up for it, and maintain the quality of both products.
edit: for a minute there I was unsure if Tomas wrote that info, but I have checked for it, and yes, I am correct in saying the above. And yes, Marek is correct above; I remember seeing this decision to split the products in a marketing doc given to the entire team months and months ago.

I also thought Miner Wars SP/MP and Miner Wars MMO will be one product but didn't thought you would give it for free to the preorderers because of misconception.

Strange doings, but nice. How does this tie in with notions in that other topic awhile back regarding modding and the need of an internet connection/server to handle some ingame computations---what with Single Player and the MMO being separate entities now?

Artimus, it says in Gamersgate:
Miner Wars MMO will be a separate product and is not part of the current pre-order discount!
I'm trying to get the guys over at GOG to pick it up, but some of them are not sure about this. Can you clarify? Does the offer still apply in this case?

Oh good. Now I don't feel as bad for having paid for a downloaded version that won't install (because I'm too lazy to uninstall my old Closed Beta version that FINALLY managed to auto-update (!!!), but auto-updated to be the same as the Pre-Order version).
I honestly wouldn't mind a slightly extended deadline for some of us. It was only by chance that I had decided ".. >:( fine I'll see what's going on here for a bit then be bored again" (I have trouble finding things I want to stick to doing as of late).. of course it doesn't directly matter to me since I did pre-order, and now I'm happy about it. But it only gives about a week for everyone who hasn't ordered and it took me longer than that to not only figure out how to make any use of the order system (I hate paypal), but to actually get the gumption to fork out some cash because I am cheap :P
Then again, I paid for Trackmania United Forever with little hesitation...
Indeed though, I did believe that I'd be getting a bit more than my money's worth (like 11-12 dollars) for an awesome game that could be about 90% of what I always wanted (there's no such thing as a game that can 100% satisfy someone so...): 100% action-based 6DoF shooter action with some single player for when my internet connection is being throttled, a map editor, sandbox mode, and most importantly of all, a huge MMO mode that is NOT a hack&slash/press-a-button-and-let-your-stats-do-everything game, encompassing the entire asteroid belt for when my friends are getting high and I actually don't want to (and so when they come back hammered as you'd never imagine, I can show them this game and really mess with their heads XD).
The wording of both the Wiki and the advertisements fully led me to believe this was an all-in-one package, because that was pretty much exactly what it said on the tin.
As a side note, I like how so far your game's currency unit hasn't been decided, and it was referred to in the email as "'money points' (or whatever the hell they are)"

Does this mean that we who have pre-ordered will automatically get a copy of the mmo when it is released or is there someplace we need to sign up or request this?

You will get the MMO automatically. It will unlock itself once MMO is finished.
Miner Wars (single player / MMO / or any future expansion) is still one application (one installer), so the features you can access are controlled by products you purchased. It's like unlocking a TV channel on your TV set, or something like that.

Ok, sorry but i'm still a little bit confused... I'm not familiar with a lot of the terminology i've seen so far so i'm always just guessing at the meaning, things getting different names all of a sudden always confuse me a lot, and so on... I'd like to just post the big questions with as much detail as i could possibly hope for in order to ban every possible doubt from my mind and so other people with similar doubts can do the same. Could you please clear it up in full detail for me/us?
----------
1)
So i bought 'it' from the store a few weeks ago:
-it was the only 'game' item in the store then
-its 700MB installer file was downloadable after paying 10 euros (70% discount)
-its desktop icon first opens up an updater that says "Test Version"
-what is launched after that calls itself the "pre-alpha test stage" and the "Miner Wars pre-alpha test build" (without 2081 anywhere)
-it's the thing that puts you inside an asteroid in a sector where you can fly around, blow up some asteroids, shoot some bots, fly through the corridors of that circular spaceship thing and get a nice tan from a solar wind by pressing F3 (i've also ventured into neighboring sectors using the double boost and found that 8km wide asteroid as well as some funny crates and containers)
THAT is the early version of Miner Wars 2081 and it's what will mainly be about the story mode, the map editor, sandbox mode, etc, correct? It'll also include online multiplayer dog-fighting?
----------
2)
The "Miner Wars MMO" will be an MMO in its normal form with hundreds of players all running around in a single huge world, playing together, doing missions together or i don't know what else (similar to stuff like WoW), and will automatically be made available to me when it's released due to me having purchased what i assume to be MW 2081 and have described in 1) ?
If these two paragraphs are correct, i gotta say i love the idea of having bought all that for ten euros :) But they ARE correct, right?

@ Marek: ok, thank you ^^
My post must make me look awfully dumb since i could scrape that together from reading the individual posts, but getting information by picking up bits and pieces here and there always makes me feel awfully insecure somehow. And i did read all the other posts first, but i just didn't feel certain about it <_< Especially if people start referring to things of which i'm not entirely sure what they are...
Always better to ask again with full information and get a short, clear answer than to go read a bit here, read an outdated post there and end up getting yourself even more confused... Sorry if it got you upset though, having to repeat it again :/
And i swear i'm not touching the Edit button anymore xD

@AuntJemima I'd imagine they'd get it also. In principle it's exactly the same as those who purchased the game. People based their decisions and actions off inaccurate/confusing information. Those who got over 1500 clicks may not of bothered if they knew they weren't getting the MMO as part of the package.
Would be good to have official confirmation though.
Cheers

I have to admit that the fact that you consider the MMO as a different product, which has to be paid separately from the game makes the future of the game more reliable.
Also good move to have corrected the misconception with that gift...

Hey chaps, just to clarify with an impulse purchase the page description says "Miner Wars MMO will be a separate product and is not part of the current pre-order discount!"
Just double checking if the MMO is free with an impulse pre order, as in the web store?

Skratsby, yes MMO is free for everybody who purchases it before December (here, Impulse, GamersGate, Yawma...).
That sentence on the Impulse is there only because we can't change it easily and we wanted to avoid future confusions.

Lot's of respect for you guys for making this decision. I've already bought the pre-alpha without the expectation, but will wait for it's release to purchase a few copies as gifts. You deserve the business for showing you care more about the players than the profits.

I have a question about this, I ordered it yesterday with a bank transaction, but if I do not get the serial until after december first do I still get the MMO version of the game?

Just purchased the game through the store. How many times can
I download the game? I use a gaming laptop most of the time,
but also would like on my Desktop, if allowed.
Thanks,

Hello there...
I purchased the game a while ago from Impulse. I just found the Miner Wars website and saw the MMO offer. I entered my code, but it is already 12/01/2010 for you guys (still 11/30/2010 here on the west coast of the USA).
Do you need me to send you an invoice in order for me to be included in the free MMO offer?
I'm rather excited for the MMO... this looks like a lot of fun :-P
Thank you!

Unfortunately it's past the deadline. You will still receive the single player and multi-player version.
See original post for an explanation on why we have to keep the products separate.

Just wonderin' here...

Translation:
Eh wouw, you are registered since 7 january 2011, the last day for registration on which you get the MMO was the first of december 2010. The MMO is going to be a seperate release for which you'll probably have to pay a small fee if you didn't register before said date.
