| Hello you Descentish types :)
Listen. When the time comes we will need some Veteran Descent Aces to sit down and play a few matches. We will watch these matches and draw some conclusions. These matches will be held in three areas - deep space, Inside Asteroid, In Descent-type levels (those will be the mines in the asteroids) - imagine them exactly as you would in Descent. So what will we need? We will need some kind of competition throughout the Descent community. A series of Descent Matches will be held and 24 of the best pilots will be chosen as test-pilots for Miner Wars. Memorythief - you seem to be quite a resourceful lad and you have already been chosen as one of the test pilots but I would like to ask you if you would be able to take on this daunting task. Others will also be welcome to help. We will need some special page for the competition and also some community management. It has to get as much publicity as possible and also generate the best that are out there.
THX!!! |

| @muggs: It's not too late to play *Descent you know.
@Darghan: Most of the Germans speak English very well... I should know, I play entropy with them every now and then on Teamspeak, so they all have Teamspeak 3 allready. So it might play out well to do it on Teamspeak, but there are other ways we could do it... You say hold a series of Descent matches, Depending on which Descent certain players will be better than others. If you hold Descent 3 matches it might be easier than holding Descent 2 Matches. And Descent 1 has no afterburner, so some of the Descent 3 players can't handle no afterburner.
It would also be fancy to record the event, or like in Descent 3 to have a good observer tape it...

Posts: 85 | I will sign up despite my doubts at being able to win. I'd love the chance, after all...
...This means I'll have to set up everything for multiplayer Descent again, but that shouldn't be too bad. Only problem is I'd have to practice a bit. I'm considering hooking up my old computer to the internet so I can participate in this because it is a desktop and I usually play keyboard only. Especially Descent 3 since I cannot get my Xbox360 controller to work on it.
...The way you worded your post was a bit confusing though. You said the matches would be held in three areas: deep space, inside asteroid, and in descent-type levels, but then you said "Descent matches" so I am confused. And if it is Descent, then like ZevN47 asked, which Descent? 1 2 or 3? |

| Hi guys! This is Sykes, from the D2X-XL community (www.descent2.de). I'm a tester for the project, mainly the multiplayer tester (even got my name in the credits!). I may not be the best Descent player out there, but I'm respected pilot among the true veterans, and I can hold my ground against most of them! I am the one responsible for hosting the largest Descent game in history with 12 players playing at once! If you'd like proof, here's a screen of me beta testing the D2X-XL specific feature.
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/7456/descentpyramid.png
I'm really looking forward to being able to play Miner Wars! I'll do anything to try it, and I'd definitely be up for proving my worth through Descent! I have lots of beta testing experience, and I know what devs want from testers, so I can definitely be an asset to the developers!
My name isn't known in the Descent community very well, but I'm very close to Sirius and Aus-RED-5. They seem to be well known. |

Posts: 31 | The feedback you get from this will be interesting. i never played decent, but my brothers and I played the crap out of forsaken. There was a lot of things to hide behind in forsaken.... not sure if this will cause a problem in gameplay for minerwars (its seems there is less environment to protect you). Ah the memories... the titan bomb, the different lasers, that biker guy with a skeleton in his sidecar. |

| If anyone wants to play some games in D2X-XL, I'd be happy to play with them :) Multiplayer works almost flawlessly; Diedel's doing a fantastic job of keeping it bug-free. All you need to play it is your original Descent 2 stuff. Let's practice up! Add childofmaud on Steam to get some games in a little easier. |

However, I currently only have D3 installed and that is all I have played for the past several years.
If in Descent, I am sure we can get some kind of Ladder match going or something. However, if you are looking for 24 players from Descent, I would think you might have a hard time getting more than that to commit, but I could be wrong.
Personally, I think it would be cool if you had Descent players having an Anarchy match in MinerWars to begin with. Either that, or you can just observe in some D3 matches to get an idea...
However, I am without a broadband connection at the moment so will need a heads up on the time so I can make arrangements. Should close on house and have broadband back up around May 14th. |

Posts: 11 | BTW, just re-read Darghan's post.
What he is saying is when they are ready to have multiplayer available for Minerwars (Beta or whatever) then they will need 24 Descent players to hash it out in MinerWars environment.
To determine the 24 Decenters, he suggest a competition to narrow it down. Which would initially be in Descent itself to determine the best.
As I said before, you may start with a list of Descent players willing to do it, and if you get more than 24 then a competition may be in order to narrow.
However, given that I was one of the first to start spreading the word about MinerWars in the Descent community (was actually talking it up in games last year) I think I should automatically get an entry....
But I digress.... I am available if/when needed. |

| Why not just have the Dev team, Community Managers, Top 10-20 community members/contributors, and then 10-20 Descent players...
The reason I suggest this is that I'm not sure if there are 24 Descent players on the forums (I would assume so but I'm not sure). |

| Ok I've started to make a ladder for this, I'll be sure to put like-skilled people together, I'm thinking Descent 3 will be the easiest to use for this ladder. We will work on a point based system, So even if you're not too great in one field, if you overall do well, you still have a chance. There will be 3 Maps which I will disclose later, the maps are going to test different playing styles. There will be a fourth team game, so if you are a better support player than front lines, this could even things out.
I'll put up the ladder after everyone has applied, to apply Click here( http://www.minerwars.com/ForumTopic.aspx?id=479 )Indicate which Descent you have, and we'll need a place for everyone to get together at once. I am hosting a Team Speak 3 Server we may meet at, It will be easy to get things arranged that way, just download the TS3 Cliant for your OS... Even if you don't have a microphone, you may still type in the chat area, as long as you can hear what's going on. I believe I can host up to 32 cliants, If we need more I'll see about borrowing another Team Speak Server... Or if someone has another suggestion
The time issue is probrobly the most hectic, when you'll be available is something else to list. Most of us are in different time zones, so we'll have to commit to a certain time. Like my Friday night is Europe's Saturday Morning, Or My Saturday morning is Europe's Saturday Night... Do depending on when everyone's free is another issue.
I propose Saturday Midday(for me)12:00Noon - Saturday Night(Europe)8PM UTC - Sunday Morning(Japan)4AM as a good time to do it, and if we could met on Wednsday as well for a preliminary meeting. And Saturday and Tuesday there are VEX games going on in the VEX TS3 server, they usually let anyone play as long they join the teamspeak about that same time. So if you're looking for an early game with some very good players, thats a good opertunity. |

Posts: 141 | EDIT: NOTICE: I posted this while MemoryTheif was posting his. I'll just leave what I said as is and post further comments down below.
I say that we need to have a date. A date that everyone can agree on and has nothing else on their scheduals. In order to get 24 people, having them all good to go on that date is paramount. 24 is a tall order for us.
Only one ship should be allowed so that the playing field is as level. It'll boil down to skills and luck. Naturally, the GL is the all around ship.
We need to agree on a level. I'm throwing in Bill The Cat as a good one. That has big, medium, and small areas. Exelent weapon balance. Game flows perfectly. Plenty of ways to move about the level. B-Side level 2 "Mysterious Isle" might be a good one for all around battles (although I have not had any in this level). Main theme is a volcano. It has your caves, although they are really small and very confusing. Tremendous outside. IDK if this would be a good selection.
MD needs to be disabled. If we get some of the community from here to play who have not played Descent often enough or at all, they would get smuthered by the aces who use MD every second of their lives.
I'll make a video with a runthrough of Bill The Cat so you can see it. I'll make a new post with the link when I do.
EDIT: I vote for Descent 3.
Team based game. Hmmmmmm. I think 2 should be team anarchy since Miner Wars gives me the impression that you are going to be part of a team. the third should be regular anarchy. The 4th one could be the special game of Entropy which is base capturing. |

| I was thinking about BTC allready, however I don't want to release the level choices too early. Mysterious isle is a good one, but I'm not sure a hazard like the volcano should be allowed. When I played there last the volcano coupled with the BS was painful. I agree with no MD nor BS. I'm thinking that napalm might be out of place as well, since it's invisable half the time, and a cheap kill. Pyro only is a good decision, but two team games Is something I will have to think about... Don't worry about the level, there will be one clausterphobic level, one wide open level, and a level with both elements and tunnels. And then I was thinking entropy in faceoff, so teamwork is key. Then maybe a monsterball game and only ball points count. ;p
I made a thread of applicants, I didn't include some of you who didn't say 'you're in' exactly... I want to include all of ya, but you gotta have Descent 3 and Teamspeak 3. If you're in apply :D

Edit: I just saw the other topic. I'll join IF I can be there... While I want to play I don't want you guys to have to schedule games around me... If you get 24 volunteers then be my guest to just go on :D |

I'll probably get ripped to shreds during the initial narrowing competition, but I'm totally in. It'll give me a great excuse to dust off my joystick and get back in the mines. I'm not sure if I can make the May 5th game due to a final exam (I might play what I can), but May 8 I can be a moving target all day.
I'd better break that joystick out!
IMPORTANT EDIT: For those of you missing Descent 3, you can acquire a full copy of the game and the expansion "Mercenaries" on http://www.gog.com for the low price of $5.99 USD. It's completely DRM-free too, so no more looking for discs or for serial keys. If anyone has any questions regarding D3 Multiplayer, feel free to visit http://www.planetdescent.net and post there. Also, a large community of Descenters resides at http://www.descentbb.net as well. See you in the mines, friends! |

| Unless Darghan wants us to do it sooner than later, perhaps the day should be moved back some to allow time for those who need to aquire the game and for more contestants to have a chance to compete. We should still get together on the 8th as planned, and see how it turns out. If we need to do it quickly we should be ready to do it on the 8th. However if we are able to hold it out a we bit longer perhaps the final Day will be one step earlier. To allow time for the Descent community to get the word around, and other's who would like to join in as well, we shall hold the Final Competiton on May 22nd Same time. Midday(for me)12:00Noon - Saturday Night(Europe)8PM UTC - Sunday Morning(Tokyo)4AM So dates:
May 5th - Preliminary testing day, get TS3, come to show your support for nominating levels to play.
May 8th - First Runthrough - Skill testing/level voting, Weapon Debate, Tips and Tricks.
May 15th - Second Runthrough - If more people have joined from this point, the ladder will be modified. Players will get the final levels on this date, and we'll go over the ladder system. This will be the deadline for anyone trying to sign up for the ladder.
May 22nd - Final Competition - This one decides the lucky 24 winners. Good Luck
If the Final Competition is happening ealier on the 15th, then May 8th will be the deadline. These dates are going to be set according to the timeframe the Devs are looking for. On confirmation of timeframe, I'll update the information. |

Posts: 10 | Descent 1 and 2 are open source, which means that their source code is freely available for modification. However, this does not mean that the data is free. You could theoretically build a fully functional Descent engine and program from the source code, but without mission, texture, object, etc. data, the game would be virtually empty. The only way to obtain this data is a full purchase of the game.
Descent 3 is, at the moment, closed source but is headed to an open source release as mentioned by (I think) Matt Toschlog at the DBB. It'll be a while, though.
Anyway, the point is this: no Descent game, 1, 2, or 3, is available for free, and I also do not imagine that they will be free anytime soon (Interplay is designing a WiiWare port as we speak). However, as I mentioned earlier, they are available for very low prices on gog.com. |

QUOTE: I'm confused with the times on May 22. What time would that be if I was on the East Coast USA? I've got a stupid bowling tournament some time that day. On the 22nd, that would be 1PM EST for you. 10AM PST. Every other day(5,8,15) will meet at 3PM for you. Noon PST.
QUOTE: Hey Guys these times that you are putting up...sucks. You haven't considered Australia or New Zealand MemoryThief. So I've posted another post to answer to the times Well lets vacuum, [CTF]FROGGY would like for the times to be switched to this configuration: US/Canada PST Sat 2pm /-/ London Sat 9pm. /-/ 6am Sunday Australian time which is two hours behind the current schedule... Which would be fine with me, however it would have to depend on everyone else's schedule, I did note some people who had time constraints, and this would work with some of them, but perhaps not one or two...
A vote for time will be made in the TeamSpeak Server today! Now time for me to go to bed so I can wake up in time. >_>
See you all there!

We could sent a nuke to the middle of the earth, and split it apart so all the faces are showing toward the sun... uhh... If only that were possible. I live in Sunny California UTC-8 (Pacific Standard Time).

I don't wanna miss out on chat :) I wrote this around 4AM my time, and might have slipped my mind that the calender wouldn't change that day. It was Tuesday and I somehow was thinking that it would be Wednesday when I wokeup. But with 5 hours of sleep, and being awake now I understand my flaw. Today is the 4th not the 5th! Thus we'll meet tomorrow (for real) on Teamspeak. Did the UTC+9 change the time from 4AM to 2AM for you? If you're on the eastern side, wouldn't that make it 5AM for you?

And thanks Enzo03 :)

Today however there IS a VEX game that I invite Miner Wars to. It will be entropy, and We'll be playing this during the competition as well. This will be perfect practice for anyone who wants to see what a big game is like. To join... You must log into the VEX teamspeak 3 server... Server Addresss: vexeln.de Port: 44444 No password, there are games every Tuesday(entropy) and Saturday(ctf) at the same time as the competition time. Which is Noon PST. |

QUOTE: May 5th - Preliminary testing day, get TS3, come to show your support for nominating levels to play.
Good Luck

Posts: 85 | Apparently I was not informed that my AP Stat. exam was going to keep the testers holed up in the school until 4:20, hence why I did not show up until... now. Tomorrow I should have no problem showing up at... well, 4. |

Posts: 2 | I'd be excited to be in on this. Heck I'd do it just for the D3 action---bring it on. Ever since Jeremy chatted with us the other day and showed us a few clips I have more optimism for and interest in what you're making here.
Do you folks have a web page dedicated to this event (info, schedule...)? I work from 8 to 5 (EST) every day with a 45 minute transit, but I'll just have to do the best I can.
In the end I don't know how much time I would have to put toward what you might expect from a tester... if this game turns out to be anything like what Descenters have been waiting for then I'd be terribly interested in being part of the process... I guess in the mean-time I'd like to go along for the ride and see where it leads. |

| Server names?! For Team Speak you can name the Server whatever you like... but the address to the teamspeak server is: (server name): Orbital Space Station Address: minerwars.game-server.cc Port: 9987 No Password Yes that is the correct game ZevN47... You don't nessesarily need Vortex, some people prefer other methods, but it's the most convienent seeing as you can make links like D3://fake.ip.for.show:port and click on them if vortex is running, and it will automatically open the server. It also shows you all the public servers that are up and how many people are playing. It's good stuff, but if you don't have it... You will have to manually enter the ip port into the game when it's running. The server won't be public, thus it won't be on any trackers so random people won't join.
You WILL need Team Speak 3...

They just don't want you to smoke... j/k Thats a bummer, you might not be able to make it on the 5th, but the 8th is when we'll start going through what will be happening.
