Miner Wars Frontline Developer - Models 3D - Introduction

How to start - step by step

To share your model with the community and our team, upload it to our forum: http://www.minerwars.com/ForumCategory.aspx?id=10. Include a screenshot + textures + the model itself.

Important: This currently works only in Miner Wars TEST build! It won't work in the PUBLIC build.

What to install?

  • Visual Studio Express 2010 - http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9709939
  • XNA 4.0 Game Studio - http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=23714

Few basic steps for how to import a 3D object and view it in Miner Wars:

  1. Go to your Miner Wars directory (e.g. C:/Program Files/Keen Software House/MinerWars/)
  2. Go to /Content/Models2/Prefabs/Custom/
  3. Here you can see SimpleObject.fbx – you can open and edit this file in your 3D software (3D Studio Max, Maya, Blender…).
  4. Try doing some changes to it and save it under the same path and filename.
  5. Go to ./Content/Convertor/ and run MinerWarsConverter.bat – this creates SimpleObject.mwm out of the edited SimpleObject.fbx
  6. Run Miner Wars. You can see the object in game once you add it through the in-game editor. Run the game in any mode (ie. Storymode).
  7. Press „0“ to open in-game editor panel with objects.
  8. On the bottom of the panel, click on Custom – Other.
  9. Drag your object into the scene to make it appear in-game.

Each material used on model must have assigned texture. If there is some problem with the material (ie. incompatible), the export would work (and the game would run), just the model will be rendered with placeholder pink texture.

That’s all! You can try modifying the object again to see the changes. If you want to make more complex changes, change other objects (make your own ships etc.), see the advanced tutorials and descriptions.

Note: If your 3D editor doesn’t support FBX file extension, try to google for add-ons supporting this format or use free FBX Converter.

FAQ:

Q: Exporter pops message "Cannot autodetect which importer to use for "SmallShip.FBX". There are no importers which handle this file type.."

A: This is caused by XNA bug, it is not able to determine correct importer if multiple XNA versions are installed. Uninstall all XNA 3.x versions and reinstall XNA Game Studio 4.0
